One of the top draws of Mallorca for families is its large choice of international schools. As your child approaches his or her teens, a major concern is how to best support he or she to thrive not just academically, but emotionally and socially, too.
Each child has individual strengths, challenges and needs, and finding the right educational setting takes time, consideration and planning. While there is no substitute for scheduling a visit in person, our guide to international schools in Mallorca is a worthy starting point for compiling a shortlist based upon your family’s values, preferences, circumstances and location.
Good to know about international schools in Mallorca
- The school year in Spain starts in September and ends in June.
- A typical school day starts at 8:55am and ends at 4pm (Monday to Friday).
- An entry test is usually required to secure a place prior to a successful interview with the head teacher of the school.
- Students can choose from a number of curriculums from other countries and are not limited to studying the Spanish system.
- Uniform is commonplace at fee-paying schools in Mallorca.
- When students leave school at 18 years old, they will usually have mastered at least 3 languages from their education. The most common languages include: English, Spanish, Catalan, German, French and Swedish.
- A school bus service is normally available but this will vary depending on the school and its location.
- School fees can vary from €5,000 to €15,000 per annum. Uniforms, lunches, excursions and extra-curricular activities are not included.

If you’re thinking of moving to Mallorca with children, finding the right school will influence many factors. The most important, however, is where you decide to buy a home. Many parents will choose the school first and then buy a property nearby – this is largely why properties in the southwest of the island (where most of the international schools are based) barely enter the market before being sold.
The best thing to do when looking for the right school is to book in-person visits. Head teachers will happily show you around and answer any questions that you have. Only by visiting each school will you be able to get a real feel for what it’s like for your children to attend there.
The number of good international schools in Mallorca is increasing, and this list is by no means definitive. Although we hope that it helps in your search for the right school for your child.
