Several aspects of this contemporary new villa in Old Bendinat are instantly striking. The entrance courtyard, however, is integral to its success.
“It’s the lung of the house,” says Alejandro Palomino of Palomino Arquitectos, explaining how the vibrant green space “makes the house breathe.”
Intentionally planned to welcome inhabitants and create a harmonious process of arriving home, the clever entrance courtyard is a clear example of the way the project reimagines basic house-building tropes. From this private vantage point, unbroken views of the verdant surrounding environment rich in pine forests open out. It’s also a means of intelligently organizing the property, helping demarcate the different rooms.
EMBRACING CURVES
Shaped in curved forms, the sumptuous house with sea views, rooftop spa, wine cellar, gym and dedicated guest quarters isn’t just strong on looks. Deploying the use of curves as opposed to hard angles also has the effect of maximising the plot’s total space. Of course, achieving this construction feat isn’t easy, and can lead to problems with the internal layout, and distribution of furniture. In response to the challenge, the architect team’s solution was to cleverly incorporate straight perimeters.
SEEDING SPLENDOUR
To accentuate the beauty of the undulating contours, landscapers Vida Garden were brought in to conceive a lush Mediterranean garden effect, draping greenery from the roof to soften the overall effect. “Vegetation is a fundamental and integrated part of the project,” says Palomino, who from the start, set out to build a home synthesising inside without. To this end, adding the final elements, Cocinart delivered the impressive first-floor kitchen opening to an outer patio styled by Espacio Home Design. Emma Thompson was drafted in to harmonise the interiors with the natural environment.
Of all its stunning qualities, for Palomino, one stands out: “Honestly, the olive tree in the courtyard seems to me to be of unmatched beauty.”
