Espacio Home Design (EHD) began as a humble carpentry workshop in the rural town of Vilafranca de Bonany. The year was 1945, and the family-run business was dedicated to making custom-made furniture. A trip to Germany by an enterprising son, Joan Torrens, brought about a change of direction and the workshop began focusing on kitchens.
At the time, it wasn’t easy to import kitchen units to the island. Under the name of Cocinart the family opened their first shop in Palma in 1974. It was a great success and they proceeded to develop their catalogue and services with great passion and commitment. Today, the interior design company has six showrooms across the island and offers not only kitchens, but an integral interior design service.
Craftsmanship and Technology
Llorens Torrens is the third generation to lead the team and works closely with over 100 professionals to create beautiful and sustainable designs. Traditional craftsmanship is still a core part of their process, but the latest technology is also used for absolute precision and to keep up with growing demand.
Espacio Home Design cares about sustainability and uses certified wood in its subtle and harmonious Mediterranean compositions. By combining handmade pieces, custom-cut furniture and cutting-edge technology they achieve homes that are soulful, sophisticated and highly comfortable. “Cocinart was probably the first carpentry workshop in Mallorca to incorporate a product engineer,” says Aina Cladera, herself a product engineer specialising in analysing market trends, product design and functionality.
Their pursuit of great design and quality has garnered plenty of interest from the luxury property sector. Their portfolio of interior design projects includes historical buildings in Palma’s Old Town, such as Can Santacilia, a 3,300m2 residential project of 15 homes. Contemporary apartments and sensational villas by the sea have all benefited from the refined taste and creativity of Espacio Home Design’s group of artisans and technicians.
New Global Brands Instore
The latest development has been to welcome new prestigious designers into their curated collection. Among the labels known for their inimitable style and quality are Molteni & C, which specialise in customisable sofas and striking armchairs, and Modulnova, famed for their sleek suspended units. Riva 1920, Living Divani and Gloster are further inspirational brands. Now, more than ever before, Espacio Home Design has every reason to be confident of conjuring up the most captivating homes on the island.
While the company looks very different now, its values of commitment to its clients and to the land remain unchanged. In fact, their workshop is in the same building it has always been, in the inland town known for its honeydew melons. As for their six showrooms, which give a flavour of the ambiance and styles they love to recreate; these can be found in Palma, Sant Feliu and Son Bugadelles.
