With a career spanning over 40 years, London-based photographer Michael Potter has mastered the art of capturing moments that make you stop and look twice. His photography, a blend of fashion portraiture, environmental beauty, and travel, has been showcased in galleries worldwide and coveted by collectors. Potter’s talent lies not just in his technical skill, but also in his ability to compose images of the natural world that stir emotion and spark reflection. From breathtaking portraits of nature and wildlife to striking images of fashion models and global cultures, his work consistently reflects a unique artistic perspective— one that balances dynamic movement with a profound sense of stillness. A frequent visitor to Mallorca, Potter’s photos invites you to pause, take in the details, and reflect on the island’s extraordinary beauty.
Turning the mundane into the mesmerising
This photographer’s artistic vision is a masterclass in blending technical prowess with evocative storytelling. His work is celebrated for its dramatic use of light, meticulous composition, and deep emotional resonance, earning him acclaim in venues like the Royal Academy of London and making his photographs highly sought after by collectors.
Potter’s approach to photography involves a meticulous dance with light and shadow. His long exposure techniques, often requiring still air and patience, reveal the hidden beauty of his subjects, whether they are natural landscapes or fashion portraits. Each image is carefully crafted, involving hours of waiting for the perfect atmospheric conditions and precise adjustments to capture his vision.
Capturing modern magic through mystical trees
One of Potter’s most recent and compelling collaborations is with Can Axartell, an award-winning vineyard in Mallorca. Given rare access to the estate, Potter embarked on a year-long journey to document the ancient olive trees that line the vineyard’s grounds. The result is a striking series of black-and-white photographs that capture the aged beauty of these resilient trees. From their twisted, gnarled branches to their imposing presence in the landscape, Potter’s images tell a story of endurance and time. Presented in large-format, limited-edition prints, these works highlight the trees’ intricate textures and shapes. This highly anticipated series adds another prestigious chapter to Potter’s extensive portfolio.
“Over the centuries these trees have seen human conflict, fire, rain, storms and pollution, but imperceptibly year by year they are sculpted by nature into twisted and aged forms, yet still they flower, fruit and provide a home for insects and birds.”
“I wanted to photograph them as plant portraits against as plain a backdrop as possible, day and night so that the viewer has a chance to look again at what is so commonplace and familiar. Photography has the ability to do this by freezing time and letting us contemplate our place in the scheme of an ever-changing world, and to me that is modern magic.”
