The premise behind Jaime Salvá’s latest compelling project in Campos is simple: the distribution of the home is the result of a set of rectangular boxes that intersect to generate interior spaces. A strong devotee of building based on cubist principles, the young, dynamic architect takes great pleasure in generating iconic designs.
In this instance, the geometric play created by the property’s inclined roofs is his favourite aspect of the rustic house Son Llaneres, commissioned by a Spanish family residing outside of the country. Conceived as a Mallorcan refuge, the cosy holiday home stands as a harmonious interplay between modern, functional design and surrounding nature.
PLAYING BY THE RULES
While the allocation of a large plot allowed for a wholehearted connection with the country environment – the landscape around Campos is mostly flat; a blank canvas for the property’s geometric shape – the challenge was to navigate strict aesthetic regulations.
“Homes on rustic land have important significance since they must integrate well,” says Salvá, who maintained the traditional aesthetic criteria of the area by using local materials typical of the Mediterranean: Santanyí stone for the walls, combined with stucco coating in ocher tones; sloping Arabic tile roofing; tasteful grey zarci stone flooring both inside and out.
COMFORTABLE SUSTAINABILITY
By arranging the different components in a cross shape, the team was able to “hierarchise” each area, assigning the property a choice of different outdoor spaces to ensure privacy for the occupants. The furniture, mainly composed of natural woods and light tones, was carefully selected by the client to reflect their personal style and preferences.
“Passive” elements of sustainable architecture were emphasised during planning and construction, Salvá says, going on to explain that “many of them based on vernacular architecture, such as cross ventilation, good orientation to the sun, control of the entry of natural light, and the location of openings in the facade.”
