Few galleries showcase such a diverse range of works from both established and emerging artists as Can Boni Gallery. Located in Palma de Mallorca’s historic district, the gallery caters to various artistic tastes and budgets, making it a haven for art lovers, collectors and newcomers to the art scene. With flexible exhibition spaces, transformative residencies, and thoughtful, intentional selection processes, Can Boni stands out as a versatile venue. Through events and exhibitions that reflect the identity and traditions of the Mallorcan community, the space demonstrates its commitment to showcasing the island’s heritage.
A significant milestone in their evolution has been the recent renovation of the historic Ferrán Cano Gallery. The updated space beautifully combines original architectural features such as the furnace, cistern, mill and well with modern enhancements. By restoring the historic building, traditional elements are given a contemporary touch, the legacy of renowned gallerist Ferrán Cano lives on.
Cultivating creativity through local artists’ residencies
Before the pandemic, galleries often relied on international exhibitions and a global audience. With travel restrictions this was no longer possible. However, with limitation came opportunity, and Can Boni began placing a greater focus on local Mallorcan artists.
This shift was an opportunity to rediscover and highlight local talent. Can Boni started organising more exhibitions and events featuring Mallorcan artists, giving them a vital platform during tough times, just as Ferran Cano in his time. This renewed attention allowed the gallery to strengthen its connection to the island’s culture.
Yet, the team is still dedicated to nurturing artistic talent both locally and internationally. Their residencies provide artists with the dedicated space and resources needed to experiment, innovate, and collaborate. Artists are selected after a rigorous evaluation period based on artistic excellence and their alignment with the gallery’s vision. For Mallorcan artists, these programs offer exposure to global artistic practices and networks, while international artists gain valuable insights into Mallorca’s rich cultural heritage.
Balancing tradition, innovation, and artistic vision
Can Boni currently hosts the thought-provoking “Entropy of Eco, Psyche, and Pandora” by Pere Bennàssar Obrador in its newly renovated space. This exhibition dives into themes of entropy, ecology, and the human psyche, offering visitors a captivating journey through the complexities of our world. Visitors have described the pieces as a visual and conceptual journey that celebrates the interaction between chaos and order in our perception of reality. Open until September 2024, it promises to challenge conventional perspectives and start engaging conversation.
This isn’t their first exhibition that’s challenged traditional conventions or explored new forms of expression— the gallery is intentional about contributing to local art discourse. By actively engaging with the local community in this way, Can Boni reinforces their reputation as a dynamic cultural hub at the forefront of contemporary, avant-garde art.
