In a heartfelt nod to Mallorca’s rich textile heritage, SONMO has unveiled its newest creation: the first wool blankets produced on the island in over half a century. This remarkable milestone not only revives an ancestral craft but also represents a significant step toward sustainable development and cultural preservation in the Tramuntana region.
From past glory to a modern rebirth
Once a thriving textile hub, Mallorca was known throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries for its mastery of wool production. With thousands employed in the industry and exports reaching far beyond the island, Mallorcan wool stood as a benchmark of quality and craftsmanship. However, this flourishing industry saw a steady decline in the 1960s, and with it, a centuries-old tradition faded into obscurity—until now.
SONMO, an organization dedicated to the regeneration of Mallorca’s heritage and environment, has breathed new life into this age-old craft with the launch of their 100% Made in Tramuntana wool blankets.
A gift of history
The journey began in 2022 when SONMO received an unexpected gift: an entire collection of looms and textile machinery from an abandoned factory in Palma. Recognising the value of these tools and the opportunity to restore the island’s wool-making legacy, SONMO set to work on an ambitious restoration project.
By September 2024, SONMO’s efforts had come full circle, producing their first batch of woollen blankets. These blankets combine 25% wool from local sheep flocks on estates like Son Moragues, Sa Torre, and Vistamar, with 75% premium wool from Spanish Merino sheep. The result? Luxurious, handmade blankets that celebrate sustainability and craftsmanship.
Sustainability meets tradition
For SONMO, this endeavour is about more than producing beautiful products; it’s about fostering a deeper connection with the island’s heritage and environment. By sourcing wool from local flocks and promoting sustainable land management practices, SONMO supports biodiversity and contributes to the preservation of the Serra de Tramuntana—a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011.
“We are proud to offer a range of 100% Made in Tramuntana blankets,” shares Clara Vignal, lead coordinator of the textile project. “It is a product that supports both sustainability and local tradition.”
