Reinventing Tradition

Reviving Mallorca’s heritage with design

SEAT Playero

The SEAT Playero is a relic of a different Mallorca—a time when summers seemed endless, roads were serene, and adventure meant piling into a sun-faded, open-air car with towels and baskets of warm, freshly baked ensaimadas. Designed exclusively in the 1960s for Melia hotel guests, this charming vehicle was once a way to explore the island’s unspoiled beauty. Melvin Stoltze, drawn to its nostalgic allure, stumbled upon the Playero and saw a unique opportunity—not just to restore it, but to breathe new life into it, merging classic design with contemporary style.

A Passion Project with History

After years in London’s fast-paced creative world, Melvin returned to his childhood home of Mallorca with a vision—to reconnect with the island’s rich heritage. “London was an incredible place to grow creatively, but I always felt like I was running,” he reflects. “Here, I can take my time, focus on craftsmanship, and truly connect with the people I work with.”

Melvin’s meticulous approach to restoration blends history with innovation. He works exclusively with local artisans—mechanics, metalworkers, and upholsterers—creating a collaborative process that brings forgotten gems back to life. Melvin´s vision goes beyond cars; it’s about storytelling and reviving Mallorca’s spirit through beautifully crafted objects. He selects high-quality, locally sourced materials and incorporates subtle design touches that transform each vehicle into a functional piece of art.

Additionally, every Playero Melvin buys must have a Palma de Mallorca (PM) number plate, a small but meaningful detail that reflects the car’s genuine local provenance. Since the PM designation was later replaced with IB, there won’t be any more PM-plated cars, making them a rare and nostalgic element of Mallorca’s automotive history.

A Vision Beyond Cars

While the SEAT Playero project has gained attention, it’s only the beginning for Melvin. He sees it as an entry point to a much broader exploration of Mallorcan craftsmanship, including designing modern furniture based on traditional island styles and developing properties that blend local heritage with contemporary aesthetics. He is even setting his sights on reviving a llaut, Mallorca’s traditional wooden fishing boat. “Mallorca has this rhythm that allows you to breathe,” he says. “I wanted to create things that have meaning, and this island gives me the space and inspiration to do that.”

Melvin’s work really reflects Mallorca’s slow-living ethos, artisanal traditions, and evolving community. Even his brand’s logo incorporates an ancient Mallorcan embroidery technique, blending history with modern design.

With a growing international presence and collaborations with influential brands, Melvin is at the forefront of a new wave of creative entrepreneurs who are shaping Mallorca’s future while honouring its past. His vision is clear: to make heritage relevant, desirable and alive once more.
