Valldemossa’s artful sanctuary

Hotel Valldemossa uniquely combines art and luxury

Hotel Valldemossa

A new passion project from husband Miguel Conde and his architect wife Cristina Martí, Hotel Valldemossa reopened this spring to great acclaim. A 12-bedroom historic manor in one of Mallorca’s most ravishing settings, its fresh renovation demanded a special and particular approach. By collaborating with designer Luis Fernández, focusing on the essence of the building and its remarkable natural surroundings, the It Mallorca team developed a fitting proposal for the interiors.

With relaxed sophistication at the forefront, the hotel aesthetic is a heady blend of avant-garde design and original authenticity. Terracotta flooring, wooden beams and an earthy colour palette provide the backdrop for tasteful furniture and antiques, and a superb collection of artworks showcased throughout. The result is a refined, artful sanctuary; a place of peace and harmony where guests can luxuriate in the quintessential ‘other Mallorca.’

For the love of art

“Top-level contemporary art plays a fundamental role,” says a hotel spokesperson, “with original pieces from both emerging and established creators, both Spanish and foreign.”
One such attention-commanding work is a big statement piece by Catalonian artist Jordi Alcaraz, specially commissioned for a wall in the hotel’s lounge. Other well-known names include ceramicist and painter Jaume Roig, famous for his heavy, dream-like objects, and conceptual photographer Roland Fischer/or. Consistently keen to champion emerging talent as witnessed in its other five hotels, It Mallorca has made sure its newest addition is rich in lesser-known artists; Richard Sino, Aythamy Armas, Antonia Ferrer and Andrea Torres all feature in bedrooms and public spaces:

“It’s a special highlight for every art lover, and the balance of art, curated design, antique treasures, fine fabrics and modern design elements give each hotel its very own special charm.”

Drawing heavily from 1950s France, designer Fernández carefully sourced original furnishings from 20th century icons including Le Corbusier, Charlotte Perriand and Miguel Milà, artfully mixing them up with sleek creations from standout Italian, Spanish and German firms like Cassina, Padova, Sancal and ClassiCon.

Taken in conjunction with the sight, scent and feel of the gardens, full of birdsong and richly fragranced with lavender and rosemary, the overriding effect is of soothing, understated opulence.

Rave reviews

“Yesterday I experienced something really special at the Hotel Valldemossa: one of the most beautiful bird concerts I have ever witnessed,” stated one of the first guest reviews. “They sang at dawn and dusk, saying goodbye to the day. It was a beautiful connection with nature.”

Others commented on the notable ‘home-from-home’ atmosphere; and of course, the world-class gastronomy at hotel restaurant De Tokio a Lima, and the powerfully healing spa.

Owing to its sanctuary-like aura, owner Miguel Conde believes his newest opening is a first for It Mallorca, the company responsible for Palma’s Can Cera, amongst others.

“Hotel Valldemossa is deep rooted in history, and has had new life breathed into it like with our other five properties, but the difference is the feeling,” he says.
