Son Cifre: quarry to contemporary home

Historical property meets modern design near Manacor

Cecilia Sagrera and her team at Aquaquae looked at an old quarry in the countryside of Manacor and envisioned a modern retreat. Where others found an old building, they saw an opportunity to design something that celebrates nature, simplicity, and a connection to the past while creating something new. Soon, this abandoned piece of land was transformed into a modern luxury home and architectural marvel. The completely renovated property, Son Cifre, links the past and the present, connecting Mallorcan heritage with its future.

Sacred connection to nature and history

Son Cifre was designed with the Mallorcan landscape in mind. Tall cypress trees line the private road leading to the secluded property. The interior courtyard is the heart of the home, infusing each room with life and creating a natural flow between day and night, continuously connecting its inhabitants to nature. Light played a crucial role in the layout of the home, as natural light is one of the island’s major gifts.

The architecture of the house also draws on the island’s rich history, blending Mediterranean influences with Moroccan flair. The pool in the garden, originally a reservoir— a feature common on the island and reminiscent of historical times —has been thoughtfully renovated to meet modern requirements. With four bedrooms, multiple terraces, and a spacious living room, Son Cifre is designed to offer comfort and elegance.

Contemporary design in the countryside

The house features an open, airy layout with clean lines and a minimalist aesthetic that emphasises simplicity. Floor-to-ceiling windows flood the spaces with an airy feeling, blurring the boundaries between indoors and outdoors. The contemporary design is complemented by carefully chosen materials and serene colour palettes, creating a tranquil air. Furniture has been carefully selected to maintain the updated feel to the home, while still allowing original features to shine.

Son Cifre embodies a constant dialogue between opposing dualities: modern and traditional, old and new, empty and full, artistic and welcoming. This dynamic interplay is vividly expressed through its architecture and interior design. Here, these themes converge to create a space that is both a home and a work of art in continuous evolution.
