My husband’s birthday was coming up and I was trying to think of something special to make it a memorable occasion for him. My problem was solved when I was invited to try the newly revived breakfast concept at the Maricel Hotel, close to Palma. I was really excited about this pending review as the restaurant was awarded the title of the ‘Best Breakfast in the World’ in 2004. Indeed, I had celebrated many special occasions here in the past.
The new ‘Desayuno Maricel’ is a relaxed affair so you need plenty of time to savour every mouthful of the 11 courses, and of course the stunning views from the waterfront dining terrace.
The Maricel is one of the oldest seafront 5-star hotels on Mallorca – having been closed for years as it underwent a substantial reform, and has since enjoyed considerable success attracting Presidents and celebrities to stay here. But competition is growing on the island, considered by many to be the gourmet capital of the Mediterranean, so top restaurants constantly need to reinvent themselves if they are to stay relevant in today’s ever growing and improving restaurant scene on Mallorca.
A brilliant move by the Hospes management group was to appoint roaming Catalan ‘chef de cuisine,’ Didac Vellve, who is responsible for reincarnating the hotel as a popular venue for sophisticated diners. Ably assisted by Mallorcan pastry chef Mariló Escobar, who is responsible for the innovative creations, preparation and presentation of the 11 dishes that make up this unforgettable experience.
Accompanied by our closest friends we gathered to celebrate my ‘nearest and dearest’s’ birthday, and all agreed it truly was a breakfast fit for a king.
