Transition: From London to Mallorca

Lorenzo Vasini shares his business and family life

Lorenzo Vasini

We meet ex-Londoner, Lorenzo Vasini, in the tastefully renovated El Terreno Club. The digital transformation and strategy consultant made the move to the island five years ago with his wife and then 6-year-old twins. The gloom of the first Covid lockdown sparked the idea for a complete life change and it only took them ten weeks, from the initial idea, to landing on the island as new residents. “We thought there’s a million reason why we shouldn’t do it and the longer we wait, the easier it’s going to be for all those millions of reasons to come up and we don’t do it,” Lorenzo says, about the speedy decision.

Exploring Financial Viability

“The ability to sustain your life financially is the first thing to think about,” Lorenzo says. “Do you need to rely on the island for your income? Or do you have income off-island?” Perhaps to manage the fear of such a drastic move, Lorenzo only predicted living abroad for two years. He planned to commute to London from Monday to Thursday once life had “snapped back to normal”. Except, life didn’t. Covid made working remotely the new normal. And, as Lorenzo relaxed into life on Mallorca, he realised he didn’t want to travel every week. “I wanted to get more connected to the island and for me, the way to do that was to do business here,” says the entrepreneur. He acquired a property management company in Pollensa, HPM Mallorca, which had an established customer base and set about applying technology and improving its efficiency and branding. “There’s a lot of opportunity for business owners in service businesses which are not particularly sexy which have regular, recurring income which you can start to plan around,” he says.

A Relaxed Family

The family integrates the best the island has to offer in their daily life, whether its walks in Bellver forest or post-school afternoons at the beach. “I never thought that we could offer our children a childhood and a freedom to play in a way that we, people in our forties and fifties, had the opportunity when we were younger,” says Lorenzo. He advises newbies to relax around their children to make integration easier. “It’s a different pace here,” he says, adding that’s he’s 100% more spontaneous. Lorenzo hasn’t lost any of his drive and love of business since moving to the Mediterranean island, and when challenges arise, a walk along Pine Walk in Pollensa soon brings him peace and perspective.
