Stepping Inside the Vitra Universe at Es Baluard

For one day only, the historic Aljub at Es Baluard Museu became something entirely unexpected: a home.

Created by Mallorca-based interior design specialists Espacio Home Design, La Casa Vitra invited visitors to step beyond the traditional showroom experience and discover how some of the world’s most celebrated design pieces might exist within the rhythms of everyday life.

Presented in collaboration with Vitra, the installation transformed the museum space into a series of carefully curated domestic environments. Rather than displaying furniture as isolated objects, the exhibition encouraged visitors to experience design as it is intended to be lived with — woven naturally into the spaces where we read, work, gather, create and unwind.

A home imagined within the museum

The journey began beneath the soft glow of Isamu Noguchi’s iconic Akari light sculptures. Handcrafted using traditional Japanese washi paper techniques, these sculptural lamps introduced a sense of warmth and intimacy that set the tone for the experience ahead. Passing through this illuminated threshold, visitors entered a sequence of seven living spaces designed to evoke the feeling of stepping into someone’s private home.

Each environment explored a different aspect of contemporary living. A tranquil library invited moments of quiet reflection, while generous lounge areas demonstrated how comfort and craftsmanship can coexist effortlessly. Elsewhere, workspaces, dining settings and creative corners illustrated the increasingly fluid relationship between home, work and leisure that characterises modern life.

Design that lives with us

Throughout the installation, some of Vitra’s most recognisable designs appeared not as museum pieces but as functional elements within a lived environment. Works by Charles and Ray Eames, Jean Prouvé, Jasper Morrison, Antonio Citterio, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, Verner Panton and Alvar Aalto formed part of a carefully choreographed dialogue between architecture, furniture and human experience.

More than 700 architects, designers, students and design enthusiasts registered to visit the installation throughout the day. The programme combined open access sessions for professionals and students with an evening gathering for invited guests from the worlds of architecture, design and culture, culminating in a guided tour and outdoor display within the museum grounds.

An evolving design legacy

For Espacio Home Design, the installation reflects a philosophy that has evolved over more than 80 years. Founded on three generations of woodworking expertise, the Mallorcan company has grown from its artisanal roots into a multidisciplinary interior design practice with six showrooms across the island and a team of more than 100 professionals.

At its heart, La Casa Vitra explored a simple but powerful idea: that great design is not defined by rarity or status, but by the way it enriches daily life. By placing iconic pieces within familiar domestic settings, Espacio Home Design invited visitors to consider how thoughtful design can bring calm, character and lasting value to the places we call home.
