How to take care of pearls

Easy tips for long-lasting shine

Every girl should own at least one set of pearls  – I wear pearl earrings every day in preference to my diamond studs. I have short pearl necklaces, long pearl strings, pearl strings in various colours and sizes so that I can combine them, to dress up a simple shift dress or add a touch of timeless glamour to an evening gown.

Majorcan pearls are known for being one of the best quality artificial pearls in the world. But it is extremely important that you take good care of them and learn how to storage them in the right way.

The first rule for wearing your pearls is to put your pearls on last and take them off first. Pearls are more vulnerable to the chemicals found in cosmetics, hair spray and perfume. This way you will keep them safer and cleaner.

After wearing, wipe your pearls with a soft, lint-free cloth as soon as you take them off. You have to be aware that body sweat is acid. Removing this from the pearls after each use helps preserve their luster. This is the most important care method, because the acid an erode the pearl layers so the luster will be reduced.
If your pearls are dirty, (once the cloth is no longer enough to remove the build-up) you can clean them with a mild soap and water solution. Remember that harsh cleaners can destroy the pearl and a hard brush can also cause scratches.

When it comes to storing your pearls, the best way to avoid any kind of damage or scratching is by keeping them away from the other jewellery and fasten any clasps or pins, your pearls can be scratched easily when metal or gemstones rub against them.  To avoid stretching out the string, storage pearl strands flat.
If you are as attached to your pearls as I am, consider storing your pearls in a silk bag, velvet-lined box, or satin-lined pearl folder. Taking this extra precaution will ensure that nothing else damage your pearls.
