Fernanda Richmond, Restoration artist

When pursuing a long-lived calling leads you to a new life

Former economist Fernanda Richmond never left her passion for furniture and decoration behind, but kept it alive as a hobby for fifty years. Now, she’s the proud owner of one of Spain’s finest furniture restoration schools, Escuela Trinel. While being the founder of this prestigious furniture design store and workshop, she’s also living her dream of having a home in Mallorca.

As a kid, Fernanda enjoyed exploring antique furniture stores and flea markets, places that are quite common in her natal city of Buenos Aires, Argentina. At 18, she was faced with a complicated decision: whether to follow her heart and pursue Interior Design, or settle for a more conventional career. Fernanda’s career as an Economist took her to Madrid, but furniture never stopped being her precious hobby. “In my houses, there was always an antique piece of furniture as part of the decoration because I always saw it as something with a lot of personality,” she explains.

After spending several decades in Madrid, her career came to an end, and in 2018 she felt the call to find a second residence in the Mediterranean. That’s when she and her husband’s gaze swiftly moved towards Mallorca. Finding her dream home in the island’s countryside wasn’t easy, and, after considering no less than eighty houses, she and her husband found their perfect getaway. “We still fly back and forth from Madrid to Mallorca, but we’re planning to spend more and more time on the island.”

The island’s culture seems to fit her like a glove. She enjoys visiting local antique shops and markets, such as the one held in Consell every Sunday, to find antique pieces to restore.

“A good piece of furniture never goes out of fashion, often it’s the finish that makes it look outdated,” she explains.

Fernanda has also found her tribe among the island’s international community, often attending social and networking events after becoming a member of hc/ Connect & Grow community. Now that Mallorca feels like home, she is looking into bringing both her restoration courses and service brand to the island. Just like in her professional career, it seems that life has given her a second chance to prove that her creativity and business acumen are a powerful combination.
